What is the difference between polyester, nylon (polyamide), polypropylene and HMPE ropes?

  • Polyester: strong, low stretch, very good UV and abrasion resistance.
  • Nylon (polyamide): stretches more, so it absorbs shock loads well, which makes it good for mooring and towing.
  • Polypropylene: light and floats, and economical.
  • HMPE (UHMWPE, such as HOPEX™ and Ralon™): extremely strong and light, with very low stretch, and floats.

What does MBL or breaking load mean?

MBL (Minimum Breaking Load) is the load at which a new rope is expected to break under test conditions. It is not a working load. Always apply a suitable safety factor and never work a rope close to its breaking load.

What is LDBF?

LDBF (Line Design Break Force) is the minimum strength of a spliced mooring line as defined in the OCIMF Mooring Equipment Guidelines (MEG4). It is used to match mooring lines to a ship’s mooring equipment.

Can you supply ropes with spliced eyes, thimbles or fittings?

Yes. Many ropes can be supplied with spliced eyes, thimbles, shackles or other terminations, cut to length. Tell us the length and end fittings you need when you request a quote.

Do your products come with certificates?

Certificates depend on the product and manufacturer. If you need a test certificate or a certificate of conformity, mention it in your enquiry and we will confirm what is available.

How do I know when a rope should be replaced?

Inspect ropes regularly for cuts, heavy abrasion, melted or glazed areas, stiffness, broken strands or a change in diameter. Replace any rope that shows damage or that has been overloaded. Our blog has a guide to inspecting mooring lines.
